1. Build a Firm Seedbed

Successful stands start with excellent seed-to-soil contact. Whether using conventional tillage or no-till, aim for a firm, level seedbed where your footprint sinks no more than ¼ inch. Proper seed placement is critical for uniform emergence.

2. Plant at the Right Time

Give seedlings enough time to establish before winter by planting early enough to allow 6–8 weeks of growth before the first killing frost. 3. Get Seed Placement Right

Plant alfalfa ¼ to ½ inch deep, adjusting for soil type—shallower in heavier soils and slightly deeper in lighter soils. Calibrate planting equipment and use the recommended seeding rate for your planting method and field conditions. Uniform depth and healthy plant populations are more important than simply planting more seed.

4. Start with Fertile, Well-Drained Soils

Soil fertility lays the foundation for long-term productivity. Before planting, soil test, correct pH if needed, and apply phosphorus and potassium according to recommendations. Alfalfa performs best in well-drained soils with a pH of 6.8–7.0.

5. Begin with a Clean Field

Fall seeding typically benefits from lower weed pressure, but existing weeds can still rob young seedlings of moisture, nutrients, and sunlight. Starting with a clean field gives alfalfa the best opportunity to establish before winter and set the stage for a productive stand next spring.
